[edit] History of the Rideau Canal System

The Rideau Canal system was started during the war of 1812 because of a concern that service along the main Saint Lawrence waterway could be disrupted. The Rideau canal system would provide an alternate route from Montreal to Kingston, in case the Saint Lawrence seaway system was attacked.
